Up to seventy per cent of homeless
individuals have a mental health concern, and the
Street Outreach and Stabilization Program (SOS) helps
address the needs of these hard to reach individuals
by reaching out to them and working with them to turn
their lives around. SOS is often the helping hand
that is needed for these individuals to re-gain control
of their lives and their illness. Program recipients
can transition to other CMHA services and in time,
move towards independence.
Services Offered
The SOS program links
clients with services like psychiatric and medical
treatment to help with their mental illness, financial
resources to help them get back on their feet, and
housing so they can live in safety and comfort. In
addition, the program offers:
- Awareness and access to community resource
s
- Transportation training
- Linkages to essential community services
- Leisure and recreational opportunities
- Teaching of daily living skills
- Referrals to housing resources
- Help finding legal assistance
- Aboriginal SOS Services
Service Levels
The level of involvement is based on individual need.
Each program coordinator carries a small caseload
of clients, which gives the SOS team the capacity
to provide weekly contact to clients experiencing
significant problems in daily living. The goal of
the SOS program is to transition clients to other
less intensive programs, which happens when client
needs allow for such.
